President Pendarovski calls for patience following recent developments as parties continue to trade barbs
Skopje, 14 November 2021 (MIA) – We should wait and see this coming week what other new developments there might be after the failed attempt of a no-confidence motion against the government to be passed in Parliament, President Stevo Pendarovski has said. “Now, it’s clear that it is fifty-fifty. Let’s see whether as of Monday a new majority will be formed, whether the existing one will be restored or whether this majority will be boosted,” Pendarovski stated on Saturday. Asked whether he will convene the party leaders, Pendarovski said that both the government and the opposition should agree to a leaders’ meeting. As regards new early parliamentary elections, the President citing the Constitution said that there is one way only to schedule snap elections. “61 MPs should vote in favor of dissolving Parliament,” he noted. In the meantime, both the ruling SDSM and the opposition VMRO-DPMNE that the leaders of either party should step down. “VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski should address the public and announce his resignation after all the lies about allegedly having secured a new parliamentary majority,” SDSM MP Darko Kaevski stated on Saturday. Speaking at a news conference, VMRO-DPMNE spokesman Dimche Arsovski called on the Prime Minister and SDSM leader Zoran Zaev to resign. “The citizens decided they are against the incumbent government in the local elections… The sooner he steps down, which he announced after the elections, the sooner he will free the country from his criminal urges,” Arsovski said. In a statement, DUI said that “the alleged opposition majority of 61 MPs, comprised by Levica, Alliance for Albanians, Besa, VMRO-DPMNE and Alternativa, has concerned the citizens and also the region and our allies in Brussels and Washington.” “This group of destructors of the European and Euro-Atlantic perspective of North Macedonia has seriously ruined the image of our country and its institutional stability as well as the credibility of the integration process. By producing crisis and pushing for early elections, it is directly harming the opening of EU negotiations in December,” said DUI. The Besa Movement on Saturday in Tetovo held a session of its central presidency where the party reaffirmed its pro-EU and pro-NATO orientation. “Besa remains on the political path for justice and democracy and will continue its fight against DUI’s absolute power. We will cooperate with all political stakeholders that share the same values and goals with us,” said the party.
