President's office: ASNOM plaque at monastery was placed temporarily
Skopje, 10 August 2022 (MIA) - The plaque commemorating ASNOM at the St. Prohor Pchinski monastery on Republic Day (Ilinden) was placed temporarily ahead of the visit by President Stevo Pendarovski and the state delegation, the first one in years, the President's office says when asked for a comment on media reports that the plaque is no longer there.
"Back then, it was agreed working groups to be set up as soon as possible, made up of officials of the two foreign ministries, the culture ministries and other state institutions, tasked with defining ways and form of observing August 2, Ilinden, at St. Prohor Pchinski next year. The goal is to establish an institutionalized form for observing Republic Day at St. Prohor Pchinski monastery," said the statement.
Archimandrite Metodij, hegumen of the monastery, confirmed to MIA that the Macedonian and the Serbian delegations had agreed the plaque to be removed after the Ilinden event and to be put back on as agreed.
A memorial plaque was placed to commemorate the first session of ASNOM (Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia), held on Aug. 2, 1944, at the chapel of St. Prohor Pchinski monastery, where a Macedonian state and church delegation, led by President Stevo Pendarovski, had arrived after years-long hiatus. The Serbian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic.
In Macedonian and Serbian, the plaque reads: "On August 2, 1944, the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia took place here, at which the national representatives had taken historic decisions establishing the statehood and independence of the Macedonian people and expressing their commitment to living together with the people of Yugoslavia."
