Police thwart drug trafficking at southern border

Skopje, 11 August 2023 (MIA) - The Ministry of Interior said Friday an international drug trafficking operation was thwarted at the southern border, in cooperation with the Greek police. About 40kg of marijuana worth about EUR 200,000 were found in two bags and two Albanian nationals have been detained.

Late on Thursday, border police officers observed two persons throwing the bags over the border fence to Greek territory, after which they crossed the border themselves, the MoI said in a press release.

The border police communicated the information to the Greek border police and the narcotics unit seated in Kilkis, resulting in swift seizure of the bags that included about 40kg of marijuana.

The Greek police detained two Albanian nationals, aged 36 and 52, soon afterward.

This is the second such operation since the start of August, with the first resulting in the seizure of the same amount of marijuana and the apprehension of one Greek national.

The MoI says these operations result from the good cooperation between the countries' anti-narcotics and border police services, noting it will continue in the future.
