Police thwart attempt to smuggle marijuana and firearms from Albanian to Macedonian territory

Tirana, 5 January 2024 (MIA) - Albanian police detained a resident of Paskuqan, Tirana, during an attempt to smuggle marijuana and firearms with live ammunition into North Macedonia in his taxi vehicle.

"The police operation dubbed "Taxi driver" was finalized with the arrest of M.M (51) after 8.2 kg of marijuana and 'Scorpion' automatic firearm with live ammunition were discovered during a search of his taxi vehicle. The items were packed in two carrier-bags and then in travel bags. The vehicle was stopped near Pogradec, while the final destination of the seized items was North Macedonia," redas the police report.

The report adds that the police action is part of measures within the operational plan "Rule of Law" for the prevention, detection and suppression of cross-border crime.

This is not the first attempt to smuggle marijuana from Albanian to Macedonian territory, from this part of Albania, as oftentimes narco-smugglers try to do it by boat across Lake Ohrid.

Recently, Pogradec police seized about 30 kg of marijuana, which was to be smuggled by a fishing boat and the person transporting was to be paid EUR 500 per kilogram. ssh/nn/
