Police officer killed, 24 injured in Lviv explosions

Kiev, 22 February 2026 (dpa/MIA) - At least one police officer was killed and several other security personnel injured in a series of explosions in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, authorities reported early on Sunday.

"This was a terrorist attack," Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said in a video posted on his Telegram channel, adding that police had detained a suspect and opened a criminal investigation.

According to the authorities, the number of injured rose to 24, after 15 had initially been reported during the night.

The policewoman who was killed was 23 years old, officials said. The motive behind the incident was not immediately known.

According to a statement from the public prosecutor's office, security forces had initially responded to a reported break-in at a shop near Lviv's old town.

Ukrainian national police said the first explosion went off shortly after midnight as they arrived, followed by a second blast shortly after reinforcements reached the scene.

Not all of the victims survived the attack, the police said. Mayor Sadovyi added that two vehicles were also damaged, including a police patrol car.

The Lviv region is located in western Ukraine near the Polish border.

The region has become a refuge for many internally displaced people who fled the fighting in eastern Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion, which enters its fifth year on Tuesday.

At the same time, Lviv has repeatedly been targeted by Russian missile and drone strikes, underscoring that even areas far from the front lines remain vulnerable.
