PM: We accept VMRO-DPMNE resolution, but country name needs to be constitutional
Skopje, 22 July 2021 (MIA) — We accept the resolution and all its contents without changing even a punctuation mark, but we cannot back a document that goes against the Constitution, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said in response to a reporter asking whether he would give the green light to the VMRO-DPMNE draft resolution on the Macedonian language, identity, and national positions regarding the country’s EU integration if the document does not refer to North Macedonia by its constitutional name. “We showed virtue and surpassed ourselves in the eyes of the entire world,” PM Zaev said. “For Bulgaria, as well as for all of us at home, there is no doubt regarding the Macedonian language and the Macedonian identity. “Mickoski’s party had some doubts so they submitted a resolution. We accept the essence and structure of the resolution and its contents without even changing a comma or a period. “If we were to add something, we would mention the Prespa Agreement and the Friendship Treaty with Bulgaria, why not. But we are not asking [VMRO-DPMNE] to make any such changes.” He recalled that Members of Parliament, including those from the VMRO-DPMNE party ranks, had on multiple occasions already adopted legislation containing the constitutional name of the Republic of North Macedonia. “I am sending a positive message,” Zaev continued. “We are discussing these issues. “DUI has joined the talks. The Albanian opposition has also joined in. Smaller parties are joining in. The essence is what matters, just like the Constitution matters.” On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani said that DUI would support the resolution drawing the red lines in the negotiations with Bulgaria if the document used the constitutional name of the country. Osmani stressed that parties should be careful not to do more harm than good by introducing "ethnic or party dimensions" into the document because it would only weaken the country’s position in the negotiations. The VMRO-DPMNE draft resolution on the national red lines regarding the European integration of the country is on the agenda of Thursday's parliamentary session. VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski on Wednesday evening demanded the resolution be accepted by all political parties "without any conditions or excuses." mr/
