PM: Opposition should work with government on reforms
Skopje, 26 October 2022 (MIA) — Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski urged the opposition to unite in Parliament for the sake of the country’s EU future instead of being “an anchor of destruction” pulling the country in the opposite direction. Speaking at a joint conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, PM Kovachevski said the opposition owed it to the nation to unblock Parliament and work together with the government on reforms that would speed up its progress toward EU accession so the country could become a full member sooner. “Once again, I call on the opposition in Parliament to unite for the sake of our country’s future of the country,” the prime minister said, highlighting the need to work together during the negotiations with the EU and to adopt the constitutional amendments as soon as the screening process is complete. “We cannot have one more EC report saying the opposition blocks European reforms in Parliament. We cannot have the leading party working rapidly toward the EU while the opposition, as an anchor of destruction, pulls it in the opposite direction,” Kovachevski said. “It would be really terrible if our road to the EU was blocked because of political games. I sincerely hope we will stand united for the future of our country and for the future of our citizens,” he added. mr/
