PM Kovachevski to resign on Thursday, says coalition to include all pro-EU parties

Skopje, 23 January 2024 (MIA) - Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski will resign on Thursday, leading to the proceedings over the formation of a caretaker government tasked with administering the May 8 parliamentary elections.

Kovachevski told reporters on Tuesday that the PM's resignation means that the entire Government has resigned.

When pressed on the inclusion of party Alliance for Albanians in their camp for the coming elections, the PM said the country is faced with a choice of EU or something else and noted that their coalition would include only pro-European parties.

He said there is sufficient time until Sunday's vote for the caretaker Government, noting that all stakeholders should take this process seriously.

"One cannot act like a 13-year-old kid, saying I will nominate ministers but not vote for them. Therefore, we all have to be serious. There is no example across the globe where you nominate ministers but ask others to vote for them," said Kovachevski on VMRO-DPMNE's announcements it would not support the caretaker PM, incumbent Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi.

According to him, this election is not a choice between the left and the right, but between the West and the East.

"When it comes to elections, they usually include centre-left and centre-right parties, but in our case there are now Western-oriented and Eastern-oriented political parties. I believe our coalition will include all pro-EU parties, a progressive coalition. All surveys have shown that citizens clearly favor the country's European integration," said Kovachevski.
