Petrovska - Gram: Return of Belgrade-Pristina political dialogue to prevent further escalation

Skopje, 25 September 2023 (MIA) - The Kosovo incidents do not have a direct impact on the security of our country. This is guaranteed by the fact that North Macedonia a NATO member and our recent large investments in defense. Nevertheless, every institution in the country is obliged to contribute to our national security, said Defense Minister Slavjanka Petrovska on Monday over yesterday's armed attack in the north of Kosovo.

Minister Petrovska told a joint press conference with Norwegian counterpart Bjørn Arild Gram the Kosovo developments are closely monitored, considering that Army troops are deployed in the KFOR mission, noting "it is not easy for anyone in the region when an incident occurs, especially when the police of a certain country is attacked".

"As Defense Minister, I absolutely condemn the attack on the Kosovo police, extend my condolences to the family and wish for speedy recovery of the injured. This is another proof that both Belgrade and Pristina must invest intensive efforts into the dialogue before it is too late. Our responsibility as current holders of political posts is to make decisions that bring peace and prosperity of citizens, without creating conflicts and divisions. The situation in Kosovo and stability in the region is a priority for us, for the purpose of resuming the integration processes of all countries in the area, something that all politicians have declared. It is time to take wise decisions that are beneficial for the citizens," said Petrovska.

What we do not want to see, she added, is more conflicts that would lead to destabilization in the region.

"It is not an issue that only North Macedonia is safe, which it is. It is also about the country being a contributor to regional security and stability through its participation in numerous missions, including in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina," noted Petrovska.

Minister Gram expressed concern and condemned the attack on the Kosovo police, saying such incidents are unacceptable.

"We are all concerned about security developments in the north of Kosovo. Norway is condemning the attack on the Kosovo police officers and I am extending my condolences to the families of the victims. This tragic event illustrates the importance of lowering tensions in north Kosovo and the return of political dialogue to prevent further escalation," said Gram.
