Pendarovski: Constitutional changes must begin by May at latest

Skopje, 31 March 2023 (MIA) - If the shortening of my term by a few months helps the country make progress in democracy or integrations, then I will resign today, says President Stevo Pendarovski.

President Pendarovski told Triling that the procedure of constitutional changes should begin in April or May at latest, and the only way to reach a two-thirds majority is through debate with the opposition.

"I would prefer the procedure to start in April or May at the latest, and finish before August and the collective summer recess of the state authorities, primarily the Parliament, because afterwards we would slowly enter into election mode and the atmosphere will only get worse.I would not like to see any other way to reach the two-thirds majority and a revision of the Constitution than through a debate with the opposition," says Pendarovski.

He believes that early elections will not solve political problems in the country.

"I fear that not only early but even regular elections will not solve the deep political problems, since they were not created yesterday. We have a huge void between two or even three political blocs that have been seeing each other through the sights for years. I think that April 27 (storming of the Parliament) contributed a lot to the worsening of the situation, whereas no apology has been offered for what was done," says Pendarovski.

The President says he will think about a second term next January or February, a few months prior to the elections, and see the support of political parties and the citizens' opinion.

"I would not like to push if my ratings are low," notes Pendarovski.
