Pendarovski addresses Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance
Skopje, 13 October 2021 (MIA) – North Macedonia’s President Stevo Pendarovski addressed on Wednesday the International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism “Remember – ReAct” in Malmö, Sweden. President Pendarovski mentioned the tragic fate of the Macedonian Jews and the atrocities that took place on the territory of today’s Republic of North Macedonia during the Second World War, of which, he added, the world needs to know more. “7,144 Jews were taken from the territory of today’s Republic of North Macedonia to Treblinka. They were all killed there. That is 98 percent of the entire Jewish population that had lived in the region, in that part of the Balkans at the time. I'm talking about 1943, when all these people were taken from their homes. According to some relevant historical sources, this is, unfortunately, the highest percentage in Europe of Jewish population taken and killed in the concentration camps,” noted President Pendarovski, his office said in a press release. Pendarovski said that in memory of all those people, a Holocaust Memorial Center was built in Skopje in 2011, adding that thousands of people have so far visited the memorial center and learned about the crimes committed by Nazi Germany and its allies at the time. He announced that North Macedonia has made several more commitments for the near future in terms of raising awareness on anti-Semitism and educating about Holocaust remembrance. “We are ready to increase the number of classes on anti-Semitism and the Holocaust and to introduce a mandatory visit to the Holocaust Museum for all students,” Pendarovski told the forum.
