Parties nominate representatives in Electoral Code working group

Skopje, 29 January 2026 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said Thursday that political parties have nominated representatives for the Electoral Code working group.

The list has already been submitted to Justice Minister Igor Filkov, who will schedule the first meeting of the working group. VMRO-DPMNE, ZNAM, Vlen, SDSM, DUI, Levica, Ziadin Sela-led Alliance of Albanians and Arben Taravari-led Alliance of Albanians have nominated two representatives each, while the Party of Turks and LDP one each.

"Political parties have nominated their representatives and we have forwarded the list to the Ministry of Justice. I spoke to the Justice Minister and we expect the first official meeting to materialize soon. I hope the working group, along with all others involved in the process - experts and institutions involved in the electoral process - will be expedient and eventually produce an Electoral Code acceptable for all, and one that is much better than the previous ones," Speaker Gashi told a press briefing.

The Speaker said he was unaware if the Electoral Code will be an entirely new law or only amend the existing one.

"I don't know. The Justice Minister will provide the information at the first meeting. This is what we agreed on during the initial coordination meeting with the Ministry of Justice - to have the text presented once the working group is set up. We will see then if the text only amends the Electoral Code or if it is an entirely new text," said Gashi.

Participants at the recent leaders' meeting agreed over the need for a new Electoral Code, which should be ready by June. If more than one-third of the Code is amended, then an entirely new text is drafted. Otherwise, the existing one will be amended.
