Skopje, 26 July 2021 (MIA) – Members of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs reviewed the draft-law amending the Law on Citizenship, in a fast-track procedure, in second reading. Committee chair Arber Ademi told MIA on Monday that the amendments were reviewed and none of them was accepted and adopted by the members of the committee. “The second day ended with reviewing all amendments. Although at the beginning, both on the first day and today – on the second day of the discussion on the draft-law, there were many procedural interventions by the opposition MPs. In the end, the decisions were made by a majority vote in the committee,” Ademi said. The draft-law goes to plenary session of the Parliament, i.e. the 47^th session. Several amendments were tabled to this draft-law. The opposition VMRO-DPMNE put forward only six amendments which, according to Ademi, were illegible and not reviewed at all. Ademi said they had received a notification from the Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi that those amendments won’t be submitted because they are illegible. The committee on Monday has reviewed only the amendments from Levica MP Borislav Krmov. The draft amendments to the law are to resolve the status of the people from the former Yugoslav republics who lived in the country until the day of declaration of independence. They would need to obtain citizenship within three years after the law enters into force.
