Skopje, 11 September 2024 (MIA) — Parliament begins Wednesday its 14th session to discuss, as one of its 31 agenda items, the draft amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government. If passed, the bill would make it possible for acting mayors to remain in office until the regular local elections in October 2025.
The adoption of the law requires a two-thirds majority. Parliamentary sources said DUI MPs would support the bill. There was no information on whether SDSM MPs would vote for it.
The proposed amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government were submitted to Parliament by the VMRO-DPMNE, Worth It and ZNAM parliamentary coordinators Nikola Micevski, Halil Snopce and Goran Karapejovski a few days ago in a fast-tracked procedure.
If the bill doesn't pass, in line with the current legislation, snap local elections will need to be held in Saraj, Aerodrom and Gostivar by the end of the year. mr/
