Parliament passes resolution condemning ‘opposition’s manipulation’ on migrants

Skopje, 17 October 2025 (MIA) – With 65 votes in favor and five votes against, the Parliament adopted on Wednesday a "Resolution condemning the opposition’s manipulations and reaffirming policies against illegal migration".

Elaborating on the resolution, VMRO-DPMNE's parliamentary whip Nikola Micevski said the parliamentary majority and the Government have a clear and consistent policy against illegal migration. He pointed out that the Government has never agreed upon and will not allow the construction of migrant camps or permanent accommodation of migrants on the territory of the municipalities in the country. This resolution, he noted, puts an end to all speculation.

Micevski added that the Resolution also has a clear preventive role - it sends a message that issues related to security, migration and public order must not be subject to lies and political constructs.

"The Republic of Macedonia is in a state of ten days of continuous disinformation on certain topics and for that reason, one of the measures we have to take as a responsible ruling majority is to point to the citizens that the claims by part of the opposition, which exposed the public to an organized and coordinated campaign of disinformation and manipulation to consciously created fear, insecurity and panic among citizens, through false claims about an alleged acceptance of migrants and the construction of migrant camps, was an attempt to undermine trust in institutions and to abuse the sense of security of citizens for daily political purposes. These false scenarios have no basis in reality and neither correspond with the policies of the parliamentary majority nor with the government policies," said Micevski.

For that reason, Micevski continued, as coordinator of the VMRO-DPMNE parliamentary group, backed by colleagues from Vlen and ZNAM, I ask for your support to put an end to the harmful rhetoric once and for all by adopting this resolution.

Levica MP Jovana Mojsovska said the only argument for "this poorly drafted resolution" is "Prime Minister Mickoski promised...".

"Every word that Prime Minister Mickoski says is relevant to you, but that absolutely does not apply to us, and we have full legitimacy to suspect and doubt what the Prime Minister promises. We absolutely have full legitimacy not to believe his statements that he will take political responsibility if claims about migrants are proven opposite," said Mojsovska.

MP and coordinator of the Vlen parliamentary group, Bekim Qoku, said the resolution has a preventive role, sending a message that issues of security, migration and public order must not be manipulated for political gains.

"This resolution is not addressed to the opposition as a whole, but to the part of the opposition that is trying in every possible way to gain political points on the backs of citizens and to create political instability. This resolution is the most serious and harshest response as a democratic tool," said Qoku.

Party for the Movement of Turks MP Sali Murati said the draft resolution represents a “direct attack on the fundamental values of parliamentary democracy” and an attempt to “institutionally silence the opposition".

"In no developed democratic country will you find a resolution in which the majority condemns the opposition, because the very essence of democracy is in the right to disagree, in the right to criticize, in the right to ask difficult questions. When parliament passes a resolution against the opposition, then we cease to be democratic and enter the dangerous waters of authoritarianism," said Murati.

MP and coordinator of the DUI parliamentary group, Rina Ajdari, said the ruling party's draft resolution is "atypical and harmful to parliamentary democracy", pointing out that it creates a dangerous precedent, polarizes society, and shifts the debate towards political labeling.

Alliance for Albanians MP Halil Snopche reacted that the resolution condemned the entire opposition, noting that the main strength of a democratic system is debate and without debate, there is no functioning of democracy.

Earlier on Wednesday, members of the Parliamentary Committee on Political System and Inter-Community Relations backed the resolution condemning the “opposition’s manipulations” and reaffirming policies against illegal migration, which was submitted by VMRO-DPMNE MPs.
