Parliament begins session on election of new government

Skopje, 22 June 2024 (MIA) - The Parliament's session on the election of the new government, proposed by PM-designate Hristijan Mickoski, is set to start at 11 am on Saturday.  

After submitting to the Parliament a motion on the government’s composition and program on June 18, Mickoski said he expects the debate on the election of the government to end on Sunday by midnight, and the new government to start work on Monday. The nominated ministers, he added, are motivated to immediately achieve results, fully invest their capacity, because the citizens have high expectations. He announced that he will wage an uncompromising fight against crime and will have no tolerance for anyone, regardless of which party an abuse might come from. He also pointed out that young people will be the focus in the work of the new government.

The Parliament's Rules of Procedures stipulates that the government election session will last two days at most.

The PM-designate presents the new government agenda, and the Parliament holds a single debate on the government’s composition and program. 

The vote on the election of the government shall be made on the proposal for the composition of the government as a whole and shall be public. The vote shall take place at the end of the debate and not later than 24.00 hours (midnight). The Government shall be elected if the majority of the total number of Members of the Assembly voted for it.

The Parliament Speaker shall inform the President of the Republic on the election of the government.

The parliamentary majority expected to back the new government in the legislative house includes 78 MPs - 58 from the VMRO-DPMNE coalition, 14 from the 'Worth It' coalition and six from the ZNAM Movement.

The government motion includes 24 ministers coming from the VMRO-DPMNE-led coalition "Your Macedonia", the "Worth It" coalition, and ZNAM.

Panche Toshkovski is VMRO-DPMNE's candidate for Minister of Interior, Timcho Mucunski is the candidate for Foreign Minister, while Gordana Kochoska Dimitrieska is the nominee for Finance Minister.

Vlado Misajlovski is the candidate for Defense Minister, Aleksandar Nikolovski for Deputy PM and Minister of Transport, Stefan Andonovski for Minister of Information Society and Digital Transformation, while Zlatko Perinski for Minister of Local Self-Government.

Sanja Bozhinovska is the candidate for Minister of Energy, Mining and Minerals, Cvetan Tripunovski for Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, Vesna Janevska for Minister of Education and Science, Zoran Ljutkov for Minister of Culture and Tourism, and Borko Ristovski for Minister of Sport.

Ljupcho Dimovski of the Socialist Party is the nominee for Deputy PM for Political System, Ivan Stoiljkovic of the Democratic Party of Serbs for Deputy PM for Community Relations, while Shaban Saliu for Minister without Portfolio for integration and implementation of Roma Decade.

The "Worth It" coalition has nominated Izet Mexhiti as the candidate for Deputy PM and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Arben Taravari for Minister of Health, Fatmir Limani for Minister of Social Policy, Demography and Youth, Besar Durmishi for Minister of Economy, Arben Fetai for Deputy PM for good governance, and Orhan Murtezani for Minister of European Affairs.

ZNAM candidates in the new government are Igor Filkov for Minister of Justice and Goran Minchev for Minister of Public Administration.

With the approval of the new government composition in the Parliament, Hristijan Mickoski will be the 13th prime minister, and will lead the 20th government since the country's independence.
