Over 1,100 jobs created in free economic zones in 2023: director

Frankfurt, 6 September 2023 (MIA) - Over 1,100 jobs have been created in the technological-industrial development zones in 2023, Free Zones Authority director Jovan Despotovski told MIA.

"Besides the continued rise of exports, the number of jobs within the zones has increased. As of August, more than 1,100 new jobs have been created in the zones, resuming the upward trend that started a couple of years ago," said Despotovski.

Despotovski also referred to the importance of the skills development programme. Besides activities related to dual education and company support programmes, FEZ and several NGOs have been working on a separate programme for support and stimulation of skills among various youth groups, including high school and university students.

"This involves the development of critical thinking and skills. The first two programmes involved youth who took part at two olympics in Japan, whereas the company we signed an agreement with in Frankfurt has undertaken a commitment to fund those programmes in the future. We will call on all existing and new investors to join these programmes and help develop this segment," said Despotovski.

On Monday, Despotovski signed an agreement with German battery manufacturer and innovation leader for high-tech battery systems BMZ, which is set to invest EUR 64.9 million in technological-industrial development zone Skopje 2 and create 775 new jobs.
