Osmani: Start of accession talks during EU French Presidency would be fair and just decision
Skopje, 21 March 2022 (MIA) - Holding of the first intergovernmental conferences and starting EU accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania during the French EU presidency would be a fair and just decisions that will have many positive effects for the whole region, it was concluded Monday during the informal working breakfast attended by FM Bujar Osmani with the EU foreign ministers. The Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias hosted the working breakfast, held on the sidelines of EU Foreign Affairs Council. The working breakfast, was focused on North Macedonia’s European dossier, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release, adding that Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice-President, and European Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Várhelyi were also in attendance. “This meeting coincides with the war in Ukraine and the developments in recent weeks have changed the context of our talks, but also the geopolitical and strategic priorities of the European continent. Our dialogue is at a turning point in terms of the urgency of decision-making that will determine the European future of North Macedonia in the EU, but also of the entire Western Balkans,” FM Osmani said. In this regard, Osmani added that North Macedonia, as a credible candidate country, fully align with EU sanctions against Russia, but also offered humanitarian aid and opened the doors to those fleeing the terrible war in Ukraine. During the informal working breakfast, the ministers voiced strong support for the leadership in North Macedonia, which unequivocally and committedly works to fulfill the European reform agenda and good neighbourly relations, thus recognizing the country as a credible partner, which respects European rules, standards and values. “The European Union has shown that it knows how to unite in historic moments, to make the right decisions, to build consensus, and we have shown that we stand behind these decisions 100 percent,” Osmani said. The meeting was an excellent opportunity for Osmani to meet and exchange views with several EU foreign ministers and he had separate meeting with European Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Várhelyi. Later in the day, Osmani in Brussels will address members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and hold a meeting with members of the ‘Friends of North Macedonia’ group in the European Parliament as well as he is also scheduled to meet with top officials of the European institutions, reads the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
