Skopje, 7 July 2023 (MIA) – The constructive force of social cohesion dominates over the destructive influence of fragmentation and discord. It is the main answer to all complex challenges faced by humanity, said OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bujar Osmani at Friday’s event marking the 30th anniversary of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in Vienna.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Osmani reiterated that in addition to the other areas of OSCE’s work, Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine opened up deep wounds in terms of social cohesion as well, and harms cooperation and security, which are the foundations of the Organization.
“The OSCE region has a long history and culture of respect for the rights of national minorities and a peaceful co-existence between the different communities. My country, North Macedonia, protects and nurtures our unique model of functional multiethnic democracy, with a strong social cohesion between the different communities,” said Osmani, reminding of the commitment of the former High Commissioner on National Minorities, Max van der Stoel, to establish these values in North Macedonia.
According to Osmani, precisely this experience and the OSCE Chairpersonship are the motivation to continue to highlight their importance and offer solutions and answers.
“The rights of minorities are an integral part of achieving stability, democracy and prosperity in the OSCE region. As has been demonstrated by history, neglecting these rights can lead to social fragmentation, discrimination, and even conflict. Which is why it is of essential importance for OSCE to continue to work for the rights of minorities and foster an environment of tolerance, inclusivity and understanding,” stressed Osmani.
