Osmani says he cannot predict outcome, but if there’s will, there’s space to reach solution with Bulgaria
Skopje, 6 June 2022 (MIA) – Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani said the two-day intensive talks over the weekend during his Bulgarian counterpart Teodora Genchovska’s working visit to the country were among the meetings that can be singled out in terms of the constructive atmosphere. He added that the meeting has encouraged both sides to try to make the most in the coming days to find a sustainable solution. According to Osmani, if there’s enough will, there’s enough opportunity and space to reach a solution. However, he says he cannot predict the outcome. In an interview with Sitel TV on Monday, FM Osmani confirmed there’s no concrete French proposal, though adding that there’s great commitment from the French EU Presidency as well as France’s President Emmanuel Macron. “There’s still no proposal from the French Presidency that gives any guidance on whether anything can be included in the part on human rights, as a condition in the negotiating framework. We are doing our utmost, but it’s not only up to us,” Osmani stressed. According to him, it’s true that the Republic of Bulgaria demands all issues be included as certain conditions in the negotiating process, while North Macedonia’s position is that the agreement is bilateral and should be resolved bilaterally, while the European process should not be a platform for resolving bilateral issues. Asked whether the country is ready to have a condition in the part on human rights, Osmani pointed out that North Macedonia has established a unique model of a functioning multiethnic democracy in which citizens exercise their rights both individually and as part of their communities. Asked if he still thinks that the focus should shift on other issues and not remain on the talks with Sofia if the veto is not lifted in June, Osmani said this statement has been misunderstood in Bulgaria to be some sort of an ultimatum. He explained that the statement was his objective opinion that the “window of opportunity” is in a way closing with the French EU Presidency. “It was a sincere message to Bulgaria, a sincere message to the EU, and I still base on that fact my optimism that common sense will prevail with everyone that this is perhaps one of the few windows of opportunity,” FM Osmani said among other.
