Osmani: Multilateral cooperation crucial in achieving human rights

Skopje, 12 December 2023 (MIA) – Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani met in Geneva with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope.

“Multilateral cooperation has proven to be crucial in achieving human rights worldwide. This has become a precondition for successful comprehensive peace missions, as evidenced by the recent successful evacuation of civilians from Gaza. On behalf of the Ministry and all citizens of North Macedonia, heartfelt thanks for the solidarity, collaboration, and assistance when we needed it the most during the evacuation of our citizens from Gaza, their temporary relocation, and primary healthcare in Egypt, followed by their return to the country,” Osmani said at the meeting.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Osmani, as part of the high-level event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the United Nations in Geneva, held bilateral meetings with the heads of major international organizations and agencies. This involved discussions with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Amy Pope, the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

As the OSCE Chairperson, Osmani highlighted that multilateral organizations are significant when they contribute to the well-being of individuals, serving as a catalyst for positive change in their lives. This was the exact aim of North Macedonia's 2023 OSCE Chairpersonship.

“The human dimension was at the forefront of our Chairpersonship. People, regardless of who they are or where they live, all need the same fundamental rights – peace, security, safety, and prosperity,” Osmani said.

Discussion topics, as noted, included the adjustment of multilateral organizations to the current challenges people are facing, along with the enhancement of cooperation among organizations in the evolving geopolitical context.
