Osmani and Kerry hold meeting on climate change and its impact on security

Skopje, 7 July 2023 (MIA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs Bujar Osmani, in his role as OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, met Friday with the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, on the sidelines of the OSCE High-Level Conference on Climate Change in Vienna. At the meeting, they discussed climate change and its impact on security and stability in the OSCE region.

“Placing this issue high on OSCE’s agenda demonstrates the commitment and readiness of OSCE to offer solutions. North Macedonia is also working determinedly to tackle the challenges of climate change. By encouraging regional cooperation and implementing joint initiatives, North Macedonia aims to soften the impact of climate change and provide a secure and sustainable future for all participating states,” said Osmani at the meeting.

The Foreign Minister stressed that in the coming period, OSCE will be involved in the implementation of valuable projects and initiatives in this area.

“Since the negative effects of climate change are rarely limited by national borders, we have to continue our efforts to identify and overcome shared threats through reinforced regional cooperation and by developing joint measures for risk reduction on the ground,” said Osmani.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the meeting Osmani introduced Kerry to the current activities of the OSCE-supported project for the protection of Shar Mountains and the Korab Massif, and voiced gratitude for the US support in its implementation.
