Osmani – Welch: US Senate resolution confirmation that there is no alternative to North Macedonia's EU membership

Skopje, 19 March 2024 (MIA) – Foreign Minister in the caretaker Government, Bujar Osmani spoke on the phone on Tuesday with the US Senator Peter Welch, who introduced the resolution in the US Senate in support of North Macedonia's EU membership.

The US Senate Resolution is yet another confirmation that there is no alternative to North Macedonia’s EU membership, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.

During the talks, as stated in the press release, Osmani emphasized that the Resolution, supported by senators from both the Democratic and Republican parties, represents additional confirmation that our Euro-integration process has no alternative, while also serving as encouragement to the Union to accelerate our path to full membership.

“The resolution is yet another demonstration of the strong support from the United States for North Macedonia's Euro-integrative process and evidence of the strong partnership between the two countries in fulfilling the shared strategic goal - our membership in the EU. It also aligns with our shared commitments within the framework of the Strategic Dialogue with the USA, which we launched with Secretary of State Blinken in June 2022,” Osmani noted.

The interlocutors, referring to the text of the Resolution, commended North Macedonia's progress in implementing the reform agenda, its support for Ukraine, as well as the longstanding strategic partnership and NATO alliance between the two countries. They also highlighted North Macedonia's strong leadership during its OSCE chairmanship last year.

The resolution in support for North Macedonia’s European Union accession introduced in the Senate, is sponsored by Senators Peter Welch (Dem.), Jeanne Shaheen (Dem.), Thom Tillis (Rep.), and Pete Ricketts (Rep.), reads the press release.
