Osmani – Várhelyi: Constant delay brings accession fatigue, step forward necessary
Skopje, 27 April 2022 (MIA) – North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani met with European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, who is paying a working visit to Skopje on Wednesday. Talks focused on the country’s European file ahead of the June Councils, as well as expectations for a necessary step forward in terms of starting the accession negotiations. Interlocutors agreed that the new geopolitical circumstances call for reaffirming the enlargement policy as a geostrategic investment in peace, stability, security and economic prosperity across the European continent, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release. “North Macedonia has shown an exceptional level of commitment to progress on its path to the European Union. In addition, we’ve achieved a hundred-percent level in aligning the country with the Union’s common foreign and security policy. It’s time for the European Union to lend a hand to Western Balkan countries and clearly demonstrate that the future of the region is a European one. Accession fatigue is growing in the region, eroding the credibility of the European Union,” Osmani said. Talks also tackled efforts to overcome differences between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, as a priority in unblocking the country’s EU path, reads the press release.
