Orce Gjorgjievski takes office as Skopje Mayor, city cleanup action begins

Skopje, 6 November 2025 (MIA) – The handover of the Skopje Mayor office took place at the City of Skopje on Thursday, where former Mayor Danela Arsovska and newly elected Mayor of the City of Skopje Orce Gjorgjievski held a protocol meeting.

Gjorgjievski told reporters after the meeting that a large-scale action to clean up the capital will kick off at 8:30 pm on Thursday, to live up to his first promise to the citizens - returning the city to their hands.

"I am starting with the first thing I promised the citizens, which is to liberate the city and return it to the citizens. Tonight at 8:30 pm, we are starting with a thorough cleanup for the capital," said Gjorgjievski.

Inviting all media to attend, he noted that the starting point will be at the parking lot of the Boris Trajkovski Arena, where the 72-hour cleanup of the capital will begin.

The Mayor announced a budget rebalance that will include new projects, as well as the completion of the ongoing ones.

"We will prepare a quick rebalance that we will need to adopt soon. A rebalance that will include new projects that we will start and will focus on the City of Skopje, but also the projects that have remained uncompleted in the past period. I will focus in the coming period on finally unblocking them and have a quick outcome, i.e. quick implementation," Gjorgjievski pointed out.

He added that he is in communication with public enterprises and steps are underway to normalize their operations.

"On Monday, there were 16 operational vehicles from the Communal Hygiene enterprise. I believe that by tonight we will manage to have about 40 vehicles available. In addition, fellow mayors from the country will provide help, and vehicles will be included for street washing. After a long time, we will also wash the streets in the capital, the square will be washed tonight, the quay will be seriously cleaned and washed, so we will revitalize the public enterprises step by step, to bring them back to normal," Gjorgjievski said.

As regards the situation in public enterprises, he announced audits and dismissals.

Gjorgjievski also commented on his meeting with former mayor Danela Arsovska, which he assessed as a protocol meeting.

"This was a protocol meeting. It is normal to hold a protocol meeting during an office handover," said Gjorgjievski.

He pointed out that he will be responsible for the functioning of all public enterprises and will not make any excuses for their work.

Concluding his address, he said as of today, the city is open to all citizens. "This city is not mine. This city does not belong to a few of my collaborators. This city belongs to all citizens in the City of Skopje and is open to all as of today," said newly elected Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski.
