Opening of Bulgarian culture club in Ohrid causing a stir
Skopje, 7 October 2022 (MIA) - The opening of the "Tsar Boris III" Culture Club, due at noon on Friday in Ohrid, has stirred controversy and public reactions. The party Levica is organizing a protest before the opening, which is also backed by the largest opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE. On Thursday, VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski called on people to protest "en masse" in a peaceful and democratic manner. "To protest is a democratic right, but I call on the protest to be peaceful so as not to allow those who pushed Macedonia into this situation, that is SDSM and DUI, to score points from these events. We shouldn't allow any incident at the protest to defocus the public from the real problems, such as inflation, crime, corruption, energy and financial crisis," he told reporters. VMRO-DPMNE is expected today to file a bill amending the law on associations and foundations, announced VMRO-DPMNE MP Rashela Mizrahi. In a statement Friday, the Socialist Party of Macedonia called the opening of the club named after the controversial Bulgarian tsar, who ruled from 1918 until his death in 1943, "a further humiliation of the Macedonian people allowed by the government." The Foreign Ministry has called on those who will protest to do so in a dignified and peaceful manner and to refrain from provocation. Earlier this week, an advisory body was set up, tasked with giving an opinion over the character of historical figures that associations or foundations should be named after so as to avoid misuse of certain figures who have a negative context throughout various eras.
