Objective and applicable remarks for action plan on minorities to be accepted: FM

Skopje, 12 January 2026 (MIA) - All remarks related to the Action Plan on Minorities that are objective and applicable will be accepted, said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski on Monday.

FM Mucunski told reporters that remarks have been submitted by associations of minorities in the country and by Bulgaria.

"These sets of remarks include ones that are objective and can be incorporated but also ones that are tendentious and subjective, not aiming to improve the document. We must make a distinction between what we can and cannot apply, because Bulgaria will be pushing before the European Union that we are not making progress on the Action Plan if we commit to something we cannot implement. These issues must be thoroughly analyzed because such documents generate obligations for the state and its institutions," said Mucunski.

The FM voiced disappointment at the way in which Sofia had decided to communicate on the topic.

"It is a fact that most of their remarks are not given in good faith and do not give an objective image about the state of minority rights. Bulgaria's approach is tendentious, which was clear in the press release issued by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the attitude towards the Macedonian language was shameful and incorrect," said Mucunski.

He said the Action Plan is an excellent document drafted by domestic and international experts from the Council of Europe, adding it is not about the Bulgarian minority but aims to improve the state of all minority rights in the country.

"All international experts have said that our country has higher standards on minority rights than a large portion of EU members, but we can always do better. We need to be aware that the Government will adopt this document and it will have to be implemented. We will embed any remarks that are objective and that the country can implement," said Mucunski.
