Nuredini: Building partnership with OSCE and neighboring countries to deal with risks of climate change
Skopje, October 12, 2022 (MIA) - Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Naser Nuredini took part Wednesday at roundtable "Regional Resilience: Examples of Climate-Security Cooperation from South-Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia", within the Berlin Climate and Security Conference.
"Shar Mountain and the Korab mountain range as an area is one of the seven jointly identified hotspots where the impact of climate change poses a risk to the safety of the population and nature. Currently, within the framework of the OSCE Project, together with our neighbors Albania and Kosovo, we are working on finding common measures to deal with the identified risks in this natural reserve," Minister Nuredini noted in his online address to the forum.
He emphasized it is the OSCE initiative that represents a big step forward in bringing together the agendas for nature conservation and security, setting it as one of the first examples of this kind of intersectoral cooperation and perspective for our region, the Ministry said in a press release.
North Macedonia will host an OSCE regional workshop in Mavrovo in November, where the possibilities for cooperation will be discussed as part of these program activities.
On this occasion, Nuredini referred to the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - COP27, which, as he indicated, will make it possible to strengthen the spirit of cooperation and enable progress in adaptation, mitigation and climate finance as key to addressing the wide range of risks generated by climate change.
"The decision of the OSCE Ministerial Council on Climate Change, adopted last December in Stockholm, provides an excellent political framework for strengthening such cooperation. Next year, my country will hold the OSCE Presidency and climate change and its impacts on security will be part of our priorities," Minister Nuredini concluded.
The Ministry adds that North Macedonia has been part of the OSCE regional project on climate change and security since the beginning of 2020, which initiated talks between different sectors of the participating countries and neighbors on ways to jointly deal with climate change. dk/ik/
