Number of employees in public sector stands at 129,374, average age 46

Skopje, 26 April 2023 (MIA) - The number of employees in the public sector, as until December 31, stands at 129,374 people. They work in 1,354 institutions. Compared to 2021, the number of institutions has increased by eight, Minister of Information Society and Administration, Azir Aliu, told a press conference on Wednesday. 

 

He added that out of 1,354 institutions, 60 percent are at the local level, and about 40 percent are at the central level. Of those, the majority, i.e. 533 institutions are in the area of education, 125 institutions in labor and social policy, culture - 121, administration - 117, communal works - 113, health - 111, local government - 81, judiciary - 64, justice -14, etc. 

 

"Compared to the 2021 Report, the number of employees in the public sector has dropped by 2,714. Of the total number, 18,909 people were employed in the Army, the Ministry of Interior, the National Security Agency, the Intelligence Agency and the Financial Police Office," said the Minister of Information Society and Administration. 

 

He noted that no other details and analyzes are presented for those employees in the report due to legal and security reasons.

 

According to the analysis, most employees in the public sector are in education - 34 percent, health care - 18, administration - 13, communal works - 9, labor and social work - 7, local government - 5 percent...

 

"According to the Report, a total of 14,531 people are employed in the state government bodies. The number of employees in state government bodies represents only 13 percent of the total number of employees in the public sector. Out of a total of 129,374 people, 14,531 people are employed in the Government, the ministries, bodies within the ministries, the independent bodies of the state administration, etc.," said Aliu. 

 

The report notes that many institutions, i.e. 504, have up to 50 employees, and a smaller number, i.e. only 24 institutions, have over 500 employees.

 

As in previous reports, Aliu added, this one shows that a large number of public sector employees are women - 56.29 percent, while men have 43.71 percent.

 

Women are mainly in the area of labor and social policy - 82.99 percent, particularly public institutions for social and child protection. In addition, 72.72 percent of women are in health care and 66.71 percent of women are in education. Men have 89.29 percent in the area of environment, and largely in the areas of transport and communal works.

 

"The average age of employees is 46.03 years. Compared to the 2021 Report, an insignificant decrease is observed in the average age of employees in the public sector," the Minister said. He added that as until December 31, 2022, 71 percent of the employees are Macedonians, 21.6 percent are Albanians, 2.42 are Turks, and 1.49 percent are Roma.
