Number of doctoral, master's, specialist degrees drops

Skopje, 25 March 2024 (MIA) — In 2023, domestic universities produced 174 PhDs, which is a drop of 11.7% compared to 2022, according to the latest figures released by the State Statistical Office.
The largest percentage of PhD degrees, 22.4%, were in Business, Administration and Law, followed by PhDs in Health and Social Work (20.7%), Social Sciences, Journalism and Reporting (13.8%), and Arts and Humanities (12.1%).
Of the PhDs, the SSO press release says, 91 were females, making up 52.3% of all doctoral degrees in 2023. Of the total number of PhDs, the highest proportion, 21.2%, work in education.
According to the SSO figures, in 2023, there were 1,828 master's and specialist degrees. Of them, 1,624 were Masters of Science (89%) and 204 were specialists (11%). Compared with 2023, this represents a drop of 2.9%. Of the masters and specialist degrees, 59.8% were earned by women.
In 2023, the largest percentage of Master's theses, 38.4%, were in Business, Administration and Law; 21.6% were in Engineering, Production and Construction; and 11.9% were in Social Sciences, Journalism and Reporting. mr/
