North Macedonia’s EU membership will benefit us all, says EU Ambassador

Skopje, 27 March 2024 (MIA) – The claims that the European Union doesn’t want North Macedonia as an EU member aren’t true, said EU Ambassador David Geer at an event Wednesday kicking off NATO Days in North Macedonia, set to mark four years since the country's NATO accession and 75 years since the establishment of the Alliance.

“It is common to hear alarming voices who say that this country cannot join the European Union either because the Union doesn’t want it or because it isn’t capable of being a part of the European Union. None of these claims are correct. We want North Macedonia to be a part of the European Union. The path is practical and easily achievable,” Geer stressed.

The Ambassador said he shares the view that the path to the European Union is a path of prosperity, of strengthened democratic value and rule of law, as well as a path of stability. “We believe that North Macedonia’s EU membership will benefit us all,” Geer said.

“We want this country to be a part of the European Union on the basis of the fulfillment of the obligations it accepted in July 2022, which were followed by the intergovernmental conference and the screening process, as well as the implementation of reforms outlined during the screening process, including those listed in the new Growth Plan,” the Ambassador said.
