North Macedonia's commitment to EU membership threatened by decline of rule of law, Jan Kop tells Ahmeti

Skopje, 10 January 2024 (MIA) - In a Wednesday meeting with leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), Ali Ahmeti, Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop conveyed the message that North Macedonia's commitment to EU membership is threatened by the steady decline of the rule of law in the country.

"Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop met with DUI leader Ali Ahmeti to convey the message that after a two year steady decline in the Rule of Law, the commitment of North Macedonia to EU membership is at risk across the political spectrum," the Embassy of the Netherlands in North Macedonia wrote on Facebook.

According to the photograph attached the meeting took place at DUI headquarters, the text highlighted the Embassy's position on the political influence on Supreme Court President, Besa Ademi.

"Also, undue political influence on the position of the President of the Supreme Court, which is a judicial matter, is unacceptable and will elicit a strong reaction from the Netherlands," the post reads.ssh/sk/
