North Macedonia, Montenegro sign protocol on liberalization of freight transport to and from third countries

Skopje, 29 March 2024 (MIA) - The Ministry of Transport and Communications of North Macedonia and the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs of Montenegro signed Friday a Protocol on the liberalization of freight transport to and from third countries. According to the Protocol, liberalization will take effect from May 1, 2024, and will be valid for one year, in order to analyse the situation with international road transport, with the aim of finally achieving permit exemption in the following period. This agreement was reached at a meeting of the Mixed Macedonian-Montenegro commission for international road transport of passengers and goods, which was held in Skopje.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, so far, the two countries have exchanged a total of 300 permits to and from third countries, on the basis of reciprocity, that were of great importance for freight transport.

"Liberalization is a step forward towards eliminating all administrative procedures regarding permits, a process that will contribute to faster and more efficient transport, as well as increase economic cooperation between North Macedonia and Montenegro. The Protocol binds both sides to mutually accept the certificate of professional competence for management of transport in international or internal road transport," the Ministry said in a press release.

This was the first meeting of the Mixed Macedonian-Montenegro commission for international road transport of passengers and goods after 13 years, at which a series of measures were adopted that significantly improve cooperation between North Macedonia and Montenegro in the field of road and freight transport. ssh/nn/
