North Macedonia, France exchange experiences on preventing and penalizing corruption
Skopje, 9 November 2022 (MIA) – Corruption is a phenomenon that no system or body are immune to, said French Ambassador Cyrille Baumgartner at Wednesday’s seminar dedicated to the prevention and penalization of corruption and perspectives in France and Southeast Europe. “Our attention here is not to serve as a model or give lessons but to have an exchange among specialists and to try and find the best practices through our experiences,” said Ambassador Baumgartner. According to him, the seminar would tackle the sensitive topic in detail, the ultimate goal being for participants to be as practical as possible. “These are important aspects that are in EU’s focus and also considering North Macedonia’s accession. France helped the acceleration of this procedure during the summer and this seminar is rather logical, demonstrating our continued engagement that benefits North Macedonia on its integration path,” said Baumgartner. Justice Minister Nikola Tupancheski referred to the Government’s measures and activities to prevent corruption and implement laws in this regard. “Fight against crime and corruption is one of the Government’s strategic priorities. The recent European Commission Progress Report notes that the country continues to make progress in investigations, prosecution and trying of corruption cases, including high-level corruption, while also highlighting the pro-active engagement of the State Commission for Prevention of Corruption,” said Tupancheski. He added that the country was ranked 87th at the latest Corruption Perceptions Index of Transparency International, advancing from the 111th spot back in 2020. Tupancheski added that the Government and the Ministry of Justice continue to undertake measures for improved inter-agency cooperation and coordination, strengthening of institutional capacities and openness for cooperation with the civil society, and enhancement of international cooperation for the purpose of an effective fight against corruption.
