No title for Kane as Olmo leads Leipzig to Super Cup win over Bayern

No title for Kane as Olmo leads Leipzig to Super Cup win over Bayern

Berlin, 13 August 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Dani Olmo scored all three goals in RB Leipzig's 3-0 Super Cup win to deny Bayern Munich top signing Harry Kane his first-ever career title on Saturday.

Kane, who became the most expensive Bundesliga newcomer just a few hours before the match, couldn't do anything to help the Bundesliga champions as he came into the game shortly before Olmo completed his hat-trick from the spot.

Bayern have reportedly paid Premier League side Tottenham €100 million ($110 million) for Kane. Despite being the all-time England and Spurs top scorer, the forward is yet to win a title.

Bayern's performance in the first official game of the season led to sharp criticism from coach Thomas Tuchel, who expressed a huge disappointment with his team in the post-game interview to broadcasters Sky.

Asked about what happened with his team on the pitch, Tuchel replied: "I don't know. There's no reason for that.

"At the moment, for me, this result is inexplicable. It's like we haven't done anything for four weeks. It's scary. I have no solution now, I'm in dismay and extremely disappointed."

German Cup winners Leipzig broke the deadlock with only four minutes played when the ball found Olmo after a mishmash inside Bayern's box.

It was then Bayern's turn to pressure and be dangerous in front of the goal, with Mathys Tel twice and Serge Gnabry missing great goal opportunities.

But it was Olmo who found the back of the net again shortly before the break after pulling off a brilliant spin and control to leave two defenders behind.

The Allianz Arena erupted into a wave of applause when Tuchel called Kane into the game in the 64th.

But the England captain hadn't even touched the ball when Olmo sealed the win for Leipzig from the spot in the 68th after Noussair Mazraoui handled the ball.

Bayern kept pressing and trying everything to score at least one goal, but couldn't take their chances.

Tuchel complained that he didn't recognize the team he has coached during the preseason games.

"As soon as we have something to lose, it's not the same group, and that's not good," he said.

Such statements are not new as the coach, who signed with Bayern in March after Julian Nagelsmann was dismissed, complained throughout the previous season that the squad was not playing as well as it trained.

This was Leipzig's second consecutive win away at Bayern, after they claimed their first-ever win at the Allianz Arena with a 3-1 Bundesliga triumph in May, which was also Bayern's last official home game before the Super Cup clash.

"It's very important to start the season like that, but it's just the beginning. We still have a lot to do," Olmo told Sky.

"I'm really happy with the win, with the three goals, it was a special night and it motivates me to keep going," he said.

The last time Bayern suffered two home defeats in a row with a total of six goals conceded was more than 22 years ago under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.

"Before the game, I said we knew where we stand, we were ready. The early lead made it easier, but we deserved to win," Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl said.
