Nikolovski: Modern agriculture leads to higher food quantities

Skopje, 22 June 2023 (MIA) - A National Food Production Plan has been drafted, aimed at supporting national food production, whereas grants of up to EUR 10,000 have been provided to support small food and beverage producers, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy Ljupcho Nikolovski told international summit "Green Transition: Central and Eastern Europe" in Sofia on Thursday.

Minister Nikolovski said North Macedonia is the only country in the region to develop an Intervention Programme focused on support to farmers amid a global economic crisis, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy said in a press release.

"The most significant measure of this Intervention Programme was the support of up to 40 percent in the procurement of artificial fertilizers for wheat crops. The measure was used by more than 12,000 farmers, leading to higher yields and improved quality. The Intervention Programme has been extended in 2023 with a doubled budget," said Nikolovski.

He added that the Open Balkan initiative has opened the trading channels while maintaining regional stability and ensuring economic growth of the three member-states.

"Countries across the globe are facing many challenges when creating agriculture policies. Addressing these challenges impacts agriculture production and requires joint effort and combined approach for better management of natural resources, research and innovation, support for small farmers and direct relations between farmers and consumers. This approach not only strengthens local economies but also improves access to fresh, nutritious and safe food for all citizens," said Nikolovski.

At the conference sidelines, Minister Nikolovski met with Bulgarian counterpart Kiril Vatev, discussing ways to strengthen cooperation in the sector, with the bilateral memorandum of understanding on EU IPA programmes serving as a good foundation in this regard.
