Nikoloski, Geer discuss central Post Office building reconstruction

Skopje, 8 August 2024 (MIA) — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski held Thrusday a working meeting with EU Ambassador David Geer to talk about cooperation between the government and the EU Delegation as well as protection of the country's cultural heritage, according to a Ministry of Transport press release.

Specifically, Nikoloski and Geer talked about the restoration of the Macedonian Post Office building in the center of Skopje as an object of cultural and architectural importance. Representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism also attended the meeting.

Meeting participants discussed potential EU support to reconstruct and reopen the building as well as protect it in the future.

"Neglect of our cultural heritage has led to our buildings of cultural and architectural importance remaining unprotected. We will not tolerate this," the transport minister said.

"Today's meeting with European ambassador Geer was precisely to this aim – to restore the damaged central building of the Post Office and to protect it as a building of cultural value for the history of Macedonia," he said.

"The project will neither be easy nor cheap," Nikoloski continued.

"We will need to invest a lot of energy, time and, above all, professional knowledge as well as serious funding.

"But the central building of the Post Office is of great historical and cultural importance for Macedonia as one of the most significant buildings from the brutalist era and it has to be protected in its original shape and put into service," he said. mr/
