New Year's Eve fireworks cancelled in Paris as coronavirus spreads

Paris has pulled the plug on New Year's Eve festivities in the French capital, citing rising levels of coronavirus cases.

That means no fireworks on December 31, nor a concert on the Champs-Elysees, according to a tweet on Saturday. French Prime Minister Jean Castex had talked with municipal leaders on Friday about calling off planned events for New Year's Eve, such as fireworks and concerts and banning public drinking. French health officials have been nervously eyeing rising coronavirus case counts in recent weeks. The most recent seven-day average per 100,000 residents is 515, but that number disguises some extremes in parts of the country.
