NDI has asked N. Macedonia to take in additional 200 Afghan civilians
Skopje, 17 August 2021 (MIA) – Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani said Tuesday that the National Democratic Institute (NDI) has sent a request asking North Macedonia to temporarily host additional 200 Afghan civilians in addition to the 186 Afghans, announced by the government yesterday in a press release.
They will include mainly women and children of activists working for the American non-profit organization for democracy in Afghanistan. According to Osmani, the lists are handled by relevant bodies, the Foreign Ministry and the Interior Ministry, and they will respond accordingly.
“Having in mind that the number of flights from Kabul is significantly limited, we at this point are not able to say when these civilians would arrive in the country before they are accommodated in facilities equipped for that purpose,” he told a news conference.
Asked whether they will have to quarantine, the Minister said it will depend on their vaccination status and other epidemiological aspects. Osmani said that the Commission for Infectious Diseases and the Ministry of Health have set up a government’s coordination body, including ministers, which will decide in line with the situation.
On Monday, the government said it will take in Afghans fleeing their country. “The authorities are coordinating and establishing details to shelter six women and children, employees or members of families of people working for the UN Mission to Afghanistan, as well as 180 citizens, including women and children, who are employees or family members of humanitarian organizations, human rights organizations, media outlets or other organizations that have been engaged in preserving peace in Afghanistan in the past 20 years, according to the government,” it said in a press release.
