NATO's Stoltenberg chides Turkey over EU demand

Vilnius, 10 July 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Sweden has met Turkey's "specific list of conditions" to join NATO, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after new demands from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on EU entry.

Detailing Sweden's counterterrorism work, lifting of arms export restrictions and meeting Ankara's extradition requests, Stoltenberg reminded Turkey of the alliance's other security interests.

NATO needs to "address the legitimate security concerns of allies that want to see Sweden as a member of the alliance as soon as possible," Stoltenberg said.

"It's still possible to have a positive decision on Swedish membership," Stoltenberg said before a planned meeting between Erdoğan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Vilnius.
