Brussels, 20 August 2021 (dpa/MIA) — NATO is planning to set up reception camps for Afghans who have worked for NATO in the country and are rescued from there after the country's fall to the Taliban. "We are discussing different places for the temporary accommodation of Afghans," Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday after a meeting with the foreign ministers of the Allied countries. He added that several allies have already signaled their willingness to take in former NATO Afghan workers in the long run. According to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, the huge US military base in Ramstein, in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state, is already being used as a hub for the evacuation of protection seekers from Afghanistan. In addition, according to dpa information, there is to be a reception facility in Kosovo, among other places. According to Stoltenberg, around 200 Afghans were still working for NATO. In addition, there are employees who worked for the national contingents and still have to be flown out. On their journey to safety, people will first be taken from the airport in Kabul to Qatar or Kuwait. From there, they will continue on to Europe. The temporary shelters are to be set up in already existing military facilities.
