Nationals of North Macedonia detained in Greece for smuggling migrants

Athens, 16 February 2024 (MIA) – Two nationals of North Macedonia were arrested last Friday in Greece, and have been placed under temporary detainment on suspicions that they aided migrant smuggling while a third person was transporting migrants, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.

One of the arrested individuals said he is a commander of the prison police in Skopje for which he delivered the appropriate document to the relevant Ministry, however, according to MIA’s information, it is also possible that he is an employee at the prison or an employee of a security company.

The Greek police said on Saturday they had arrested three foreign nationals involved in the transport of illegal migrants near the border with Turkey.

It said one of the arrested individuals was illegally transporting five illegal migrants, while the other two were accompanying him in a different vehicle in order to avoid police controls of the vehicle in which the migrants were being transported.

The police seized the two vehicles, as well as the mobile phones of the arrested.

According to MIA's information, the two individuals are nationals of North Macedonia, and it is possible that the third one is as well.

The arrested have been issued temporary detainment in the city of Alexandroupoli.
