National football team reaches World Cup play-offs after Iceland win
Skopje, 14 November 2021 (MIA) – The national football team will take part in the World Cup play-offs for the first time on record after beating Iceland 3:1 in the final match of the Group J qualifiers in Skopje on Sunday. Ezgjan Alioski opened the scoring in the 7. minute, but the guests leveled the score early in the second half (54.) through Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson. However, an Elif Elmas double in the 65. and 87. minutes put the hosts in the play-offs for next year’s World Cup in Qatar. Group J other matches: Liechtenstein-Romania 0:2; Armenia-Germany 1:4. In the standings, Germany is first with 27 points and has qualified for the World Cup, while North Macedonia is second with 18. Romania follows with 17 points, then Armenia (12), Iceland (9) and Liechtenstein (1). The draw for the World Cup play-offs will take place on November 26.
