National Bank marks monetary independence with ‘Celebrating the Denar’ educational campaign

Skopje, 24 April 2023 (MIA) – In the coming week the National Bank will hold various activities on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of monetary independence, i.e., the adoption of the denar as the national currency and the independence of the National Bank, under the motto “Celebrating the Denar”, said the National Bank in a press release Monday.

“The declaration of monetary independence on April 26 was a significant event for our country, representing a crucial step in the completion of its independence. Through the years the National Bank has established itself as a modern, credible and internationally recognized, independent central bank, but also as an institution which encourages research, constant education and financial literacy. In this context, as part of the activities, the National Bank will give out its annual award for young researchers for best work in the field of macroeconomy, and banks and banking systems,” said the National Bank in the press release.

Two educational videos on the creation and implementation of the Macedonian banknotes have been made by Maja Hadzimaneva, Eftimija Pavlovska and Dijana Vanchevska, employees at the National Bank’s Museum. Apart from being published, the videos will be delivered to schools throughout the country to be used in the educational process.

In order to share the historic process and the values of the policymakers during the process of monetary independence, the National Bank has prepared video statements by those who directly participated in the process of the implementation and creation of monetary independence and the national currency, but also contributed to the affirmation of the National Bank as a modern and credible institution, and will publish them in the coming weeks. As part of the activities, documents of invaluable historical importance from the National Bank’s Archive, related to monetary independence, will be published as well.
