Myanmar's Suu Kyi gets 3 more years in prison for electoral fraud
A military junta-controlled court in Myanmar sentenced the Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional three years in prison for electoral fraud on Friday, according to a source familiar with the proceedings. No further details were available. The politician and diplomat has been in solitary confinement in the capital Naypyidaw since June after being placed under house arrest in the wake of the February 2021 military coup. The proceedings are taking place behind closed doors and Suu Kyi's lawyers are not allowed to speak to the media. The 77-year-old has been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison for corruption, incitement and breaching Covid-19 rules. Myanmar has been in political turmoil since the coup on February 1, 2021. The military is cracking down to contain protests, civil disobedience movements and armed resistance by anti-junta militias seeking to unseat the military government by force. According to rights group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, which documents killings and human rights violations, at least 2,250 people have been killed and more than 15,000 arrested since the coup.
