Mucunski in Zagreb: Predictability in EU accession process a cornerstone of stability and progress

Skopje, 28 August 2024 (MIA) - Predictability in the EU accession process is not only a procedural issue, it is the cornerstone of our stability and progress. As a country that was the last to successfully complete the EU membership path, the Croatian experience and representation on behalf of the Western Balkans are crucial. The successful Croatian story is an inspiration for all of us and a reminder that Union membership is still attainable through perseverance, unity and strategic vision, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timcho Mucunski, told a session of the annual conference of Croatia's ambassadors, general consults and military representatives abroad.

On Tuesday, FM Mucunski met with Croatian counterpart Gordan Grlić Radman, with both saluting the excellent bilateral relations that include an intensive political dialogue, constructive cooperation in all fields of mutual interest, NATO partnership and friendship over the past 32 years. They agreed that the coming adoption of a joint statement of the countries' Prime Ministers - Hristijan Mickoski and Andrej Plenković respectively - will reaffirm the country's European future and the mutual will for further intensification of bilateral cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade said in a press release.

FM Mucunski expressed gratitude for Croatia's continued support to the country's EU integration process, which is significant for the development of the region and the stability in Europe. Interlocutors also exchanged opinions and positions on current regional and global challenges, for the purpose of increased coordination and cooperation.

Economic cooperation and the possibilities for its enhancement was also highlighted, with the FM presenting the new foreign trade section of the ministry, while noting the need to strengthen economic and foreign-policy potentials for cooperation.

In his conference address, the FM stressed that the friendship between North Macedonia and Croatia is an excellent example of what can be achieved when nations work together in the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

"Our history and aspirations have set a solid foundation for partnership that is not only beneficial for our countries but also contributes to the stability and prosperity of the entire region. Our bilateral relations are a proof of the power of diplomacy, demonstrating how dialogue and cooperation can transform challenges into opportunities. Amid these fast-changing and increasingly unstable times, we need vigilance, strategic thinking and proactive engagement in partnership with as many partner-countries as possible. This requires full use of our foreign-policy potential, starting from traditional diplomacy to trade, humanitarian aid and investments," said Mucunski.

According to him, predictability in the EU accession process gives citizens a feeling of hope, motivates reforms and anchors the country's aspirations in the broader European family.

"During these turbulent times, EU's commitment to enlargement must be tireless. It is not only about delivering on its promises, but recognizing the strategic importance of the Western Balkans' integration into a united, secure and prosperous Europe. This is both a strategic necessity and a historic opportunity," noted Mucunski.

On Thursday, FM Mucunski will accompany Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski on the official visit to the Republic of Croatia, upon the invitation of PM Andrej Plenković.
