Moscow says no deal reached yet with US on prisoner exchange
Moscow, 28 July 2022 (dpa/MIA) - No deal has yet been reached between Washington and Moscow over the exchange of high-profile prisoners, according to the Russian authorities, in a statement that came a day after US officials said the issue would be discussed in the near future. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday that he is planning to speak with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to discuss the release of detained US citizens, in what would be their first conversation since the war in Ukraine began. However, no tangible results have been achieved yet concerning the release of two US citizens, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said no agreement had yet been reached. The US is seeking the release of US basketball player Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, who are both imprisoned in Moscow.
