More than half of Ukrainians polled want negotiated end to war soon

Kiev, 20 November 2024 (dpa/MIA) - More than half of Ukrainians want a negotiated end to the war with Russia soon, according to Gallup pollsters.
"In Gallup’s latest surveys of Ukraine, conducted in August and October 2024, an average of 52% of Ukrainians would like to see their country negotiate an end to the war as soon as possible," Gallup said.
"Nearly four in 10 Ukrainians (38%) believe their country should keep fighting until victory."
By comparison, in 2022, 73% were in favour of fighting and only 22% were in favour of negotiations. In 2023, 63% were in favour of continuing the war and 27% were in favour of ending the war quickly.
Russia has made territorial concessions and a renunciation of NATO membership a prerequisite for negotiations.
In addition, Ukraine would have to undergo a so-called denazification, which in Moscow probably means the establishment of a pro-Russian government in Kiev.
According to the survey released this week, trust in the West in general has also fallen in Ukraine.
Only 40% of those surveyed still approve of the United States' leading role, while 37% are sceptical.
Shortly after the start of the war, the approval rate was still 66% to 16% per cent.
The majority of the population still has a positive view of the role of the Germans: 50% (2022: 46%, 2023: 53%) support Germany's actions, while 29% (2022: 35%, 2023: 20%) reject them.
While a majority still hopes to join the EU and NATO, expectations of joining the EU within the next 10 years have fallen from 73% to 61%, and from 64% to 51% for NATO.
Gallup says it interviewed 1,000 people by telephone. The margin of error is 3%.
