MoCA hosts symposium on environmental and existential crises

MoCA hosts symposium on environmental and existential crises

Skopje, 10 June 2024 (MIA) - The Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) - Skopje is hosting on Monday an international symposium entitled "The Earth is Thinking All Along - A creative geophilosophical travelogue".

The goal is for the project to create conditions for qualitative exchange of knowledge, collaborations and engaged artistic production, as essential means for generating an engaged attitude towards climate change and environmental challenges, the MoCA said in a press release.

The Museum adds that by combining a scientific and artistic approach, the participants will explore the complex relationships and trajectories of the Earth System, as well as the role of art in terms of creating models of perception that inform, perceive and discover parts and conditions of the Earth, which are invisible to many, changing the knowledge about it and its survival.

Therefore, amid the current environmental crises and existential threats, arises the necessity for an art that should be our instrument of survival and rethinking, or for launching a new “philosophy of land”.

Participants in the symposium include Toshiya Ueno, professor at the Wako University in Tokyo, Japan, Alex Taek Gwang Lee, professor at the Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea, Kristiina Koskentola, Finnish-born independent visual artist and curator, Rick Dolphijn, university professor from Utrecht, the Netherlands, Irena Chawrilska, professor at the University of Gdansk, Poland, Tihomir Topuzovski, acting director of the MoCA - Skopje, and others.

The symposium also includes student presentations from the Utrecht University in the Netherlands and the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje.

The target group of the symposium is the new generations of artists, experts, researchers, students, activists and members of non-governmental organizations across the country.
