Athens, 28 May 2024 (MIA) - I expect the new Prime Minister to make a clear statement that he respects the Prespa Agreement and that the name of his country is North Macedonia, and he will use it both at home and abroad, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an interview with Star TV late Tuesday, MIA’s Athens correspondent reported.
In the interview, Mitsotakis also discussed foreign policy, addressing relations with our country, emphasizing that Athens aims for good relations, yet stressing the importance of respecting the Prespa Agreement.
"I saw some statements from the President of North Macedonia, and I think she took some steps back from the initial statements. We strive for good relations with North Macedonia, but we have often said that good relations pass through respecting the core of the Agreement signed by both countries," Mitsotakis said.
He reiterated the stance that, in their view, the Agreement has "many issues we now see regarding the recognition of the Macedonian language and nationality."
“However, the Agreement stipulated one name for all, and the neighbors must respect it. And I expect the new Prime Minister, when and as soon as he takes the oath, to make a clear statement that he respects the Prespa Agreement and that the name of his country is North Macedonia, and he will use it both inside the country and abroad,” the Greek Prime Minister said.
